Taking the First Step - University Fair Day 1

July 25 marked a special milestone in the lives of the graduating students. This was the day that their futures seemed closer and their careers are just one application form away. The University Fair, an annual activity of the guidance department, as part of their career guidance program, was held and was participated by all the seniors. Ten colleges graced the event and graciously entertained the unending queries of the interested students. Almost all seemed excited and enthusiastic in asking questions pertinent to the fields they had their eyes on.

Almost every participating university employed their own tactics to attract the attention of the students - from video games, on-the-spot digital sketching, colorful and catchy standees, to the eye-catching female representatives. These somehow broadened the perspectives of the seniors in considering schools where they will be taking up college in and not limit themselves to the popular and more commercialized ones.

As one student said: "It's like shopping for schools". Indeed. Without the paying part.

After the hour-long event, the seniors went back to their classrooms with answered questions, smiles on their faces and a handful of freebies.

With all these in mind, Day 2 (Aug 22) will have big shoes to fill. (The see the list of participating schools, click here.)

As part of the services given to the students, the High school department, in cooperation with the guidance center, conducted an orientation for each year level last June. Orientation programs are conducted every year to update and equip the students of the new rules, policies and programs of the high school department and as well as to reiterate the existing ones.

This year, the orientation took place at the St. Francis Theatre last June 16 for Grade 7 and Grade 8 students, June 17 for Grade 9 Calibrated, June 18 for Grade 9 Regular and Fourth Year students and June 20 for Third Year students at the St. Francis Theatre.

The speakers of the said orientation were Mr. Lincoln Ariz, for the academic program, Mrs. Berlita Angeles for the discipline program of Grade 7, 8 and 9 Calibrated, Mr. Modesto Sebastian for the Discipline Program of Grade 9 Regular, Year III and Year IV, Mrs. Barbara Lumanog for the Student Activities, Mrs. Ester A. Rentino for the Guidance Program, Dr. Raymond Manuel for the Medical-Dental Program and Mr. Erwin Ines for the safety and security program.

The orientation program also gave way for the students to familiarize themselves with the new members of the high school community.

Kick Off, Double Take

Last May 26 and 27, the high school faculty was in for a back-to-back treat. The guidance department, headed by Mrs. Rentino, held its annual orientation regarding its services and protocols. Aside from these, results of the action researches conducted during the previous school year were also brought up for careful consideration and integration with classroom instruction. Mr. Jonas Ocampo explained the data gathered from L 6-7 students regarding their school motivation and study habits while Mr. Mike Pammit showed the results of the exit interview survey given to the graduating grade school students. Both researches aim to provide the high school faculty an overview of the profiles of the incoming Grade 7 and 8 students.

On the other hand, Ms. Aika Jumaquio, the Psychometrician, discussed a correlational study that she conducted to know if the standardized aptitude tests administered to the students under the testing program can still be a determinant of the student's academic performance. According to the results of the said study, the tests can still be considered directly proportional to his grades. However, the faculty recommended additional considerations to further validate the results.

The next day, a seminar-workshop was conducted to help teachers handle students with special needs. Mr. Francis Buenaventura, a special education expert, was invited to facilitate the said training. The whole-day seminar was filled with interactive activities and informative discussions regarding the said topic.

The success of both activities ensured an intensified collaboration between the guidance and academic departments - both geared towards a smooth and fruitful schoolyear for the Lourdesian learners.
